Designing with communities: respectful & relational ways of codesigning at Galaxy Meeting Room (International Center) at Bangkok University, Main Campus.

Dr Nicola St John will discuss how design researchers can engage in ethical and respectful collaborative practices through codesign. By first understanding our own positions, designers and researchers can contribute to more meaningful design processes, and more effectively navigate cultural sensitivities, representation, participation, and decolonisation. Nicola will share insights from her own research projects and discuss a number of considerations that can help to create the conditions for social innovation and design outcomes that can create meaningful impact.

Dr Nicola St John is a multi-award-winning design researcher from RMIT University, Australia. Her research is largely collaborative, and community based; partnering with First Nations creatives, community schools, and design organisations in participatory research projects to foster social wellbeing, student belonging, knowledge transfer, intercultural collaboration, and design entrepreneurship. She is a recipient of several major research grants in Australia and received accolades from the Good Design Awards, the Victorian Premiers’ Design Award, as well as the prestigious RMIT Vice Chancellor’s award for research impact.
